Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

This disease is caused by the intracellular bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, which is transmitted by arthropods such as the dog ticks. This bacteria can infect endothelial cells in the human which can potentially cause the patient's death.

The symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever typically begin between 2 and 14 days after getting a tick bite. Symptoms come on suddenly and usually include:

  • High fever

  • Muscle aches

  • Headache

  • Nausea 

  • Vomiting

  • Fatigue

  • Abdominal pain
